Esther scroll (Megilat Ester)

Description:: Esther scroll (Megilat Ester) written in Hebrew on parchment in an Italian square script with Ashkenazi traits and tagin (crowns), probably made in Italy in the 18th century. The parchment is divided into 'pages' with folds at regular intervals. The beginning of the roll is scalloped and tapers to a point with attached leather strap, but is otherwise undecorated. The Book of Esther recounts the story of the salvation of the Jews in the Persian Empire through the actions of the eponymous heroine. The text is read in synagogues on the spring holiday of Purim (Festival of Lots).
