Esther scroll (Megilat Ester)

Description:: Esther scroll (Megilat Ester) written in Hebrew on parchment in an Italian square script with tagin (crowns), probably made in Italy in the 18th century. The 'pages' or columns of text are divided by painted borders. Its silver case is housed separately (Heb 768.1). The Book of Esther recounts the story of the salvation of the Jews in the Persian Empire through the actions of the eponymous heroine. The text is read in synagogues on the spring holiday of Purim (Festival of Lots).
