Manjū netsuke with dragon in clouds

Description:: Netsuke in the shape of a dragon in clouds, made of yew wood and silver by Eguro Suketada (Shōko) in Japan around 1880. A dragon with beaming eyes of silver is shown emerging from clouds. The dragon is the only mythical and supernatural animal among the twelve animals of the zodiac. The creature is associated with the sky and water – that is why it is often depicted with clouds or among waves. This type of round netsuke is called a manjū, which means ‘steamed bun’. Exhibited in 'Zodiac Netsuke: Animals of the Japanese Zodiac in Miniature', 6 December 2024 - 23 March 2025.
