Description:: Scroll 1 of Account of the deeds of Zōga Shōnin from Tōnomine, Yamato province (Washū Tōnomine Zōga Shōnin gyōgōki emaki) painted by Hōjuken Hōgan in ink and colours on paper, Japan, 1711. This pair of handscrolls record the biography of the monk Zōga (917-1003). At a young age, Zōga travelled to Mount Hiei to become a Buddhist monk. While some around him pursued status, Zōga is said to have retreated to Tōnomine to follow a more austere path. Zōga is celebrated for his devotion to the sacred texts of the Lotus Sutra and for restoring the prosperity of the temples at Tōnomine. The Zōga Shōnin handscrolls in the museum’s collection are one of only two sets known. The other is preserved at Tanzan Shrine in Tōnomine, where Zōga did much of his life’s work. The museum's scrolls were fully conserved at Restorient Studio, Leiden, between 2019 and 2022 with the support of the Sumitomo Foundation.
