Description:: Woodblock printed book, 'Monthly activities' (Tsukinami no asobi) illustrated by Hishikawa Moronobu, published by Urokogataya Sanzaemon in Edo (modern Tokyo), Japan, 1691. This book depicts popular events and customs of the twelve months. An inscription at the back of the book records that the same work was originally published in 1680 by publisher Kashiwaya Yoichi. This volume, however, was printed from a new set of blocks re-cut in 1691 by publisher Urokogataya Sanzaemon. Certain works by Hishikawa Moronobu appear to have been republished in this way. It is thought that the great fire of 1682 may have destroyed the blocks and business of publisher Kashiwaya Yoichi. The handwritten title slip reads 'Appointed goods of the 12 months' (Jūnigatsu shina sadame).
