Description:: Printed book, Volume 1 of 'Tales of Ise' (Ise monogatari) with text edited by Nakanoin Michikatsu, printed under the direction of Suminokura Soan in Kyoto, Japan, in 1608. Saga-bon edition, printed on coloured paper. The Saga-bon edition of the 'Tales of Ise' is the earliest non-religious Japanese book to be printed with illustrations complementing a text. While the text was printed using wooden moveable type ('katsuji' in Japanese), the illustrations, which are by unknown artist, were printed from woodblocks.
