Description:: Book containing instructions on the use of diagrams of signs in the sky (pangarambui) and other divination texts, maker unknown, 19th or early 20th century, northern Sumatra. Ink on bark with one wooden cover and plaited rattan band. The tree-bark books made by the Batak peoples of northern Sumatra are called pustaha or pustaka. The small size of this bark book suggests it was made to be worn as an amulet.
