- Description:
- Stained ivory netsuke in the shape of a goat, made in Japan, c.1890. Eyes inlaid with buffalo horn. By the eighth century, Japanese nobles were familiar with sheep through their exposure to Buddhist texts from China. Since then, sheep have inspired the imagination in Japanese arts and literature. As they were not native to Japan, sheep were often depicted like goats. Exhibited in 'Zodiac Netsuke: Animals of the Japanese Zodiac in Miniature', 6 December 2024 - 23 March 2025.
