Embroidered silk military rank badge with leopard, made in China in the 19th or early 20th century. Rank badges were attached to the surcoats of civil and military officials during China’s Qing dynasty (1644–1911). While various species of birds were used to denote the nine civil ranks, animals were used for the nine military ranks. From the late 17th century, rank badges with leopard designs were worn by the third rank of military officials.
