Handscroll painting, Leisurely activities by the waterside, painted in ink and colours on silk by Miyagawa Chōshun in the early 18th century, Japan. Signature: Nihon-e Miyagawa Chōshun zu. Pictures of the floating world—ukiyo-e—were created as paintings as well as in print. In a pair of waterside pavilions, men of wealth and taste relax in the company of male and female beauties. Painted in rich pigments on silk, this painting was probably created for an affluent patron. As this scroll shows spring and summer foliage, it may once have been paired with a scroll with an autumn / winter setting.
