Woodblock printed book, Volume 1 of '100 views of Mount Fuji' (Fugaku hyakkei) by Katsushika Hokusai, printed in ink on paper with blocks carved by Egawa Tomekichi, and published in Edo (modern Tokyo), Japan, by Nishimura Yūzō and Nishimura Yohachi in 1834. Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was already 75 years old by Japanese reckoning when he completed work on the first volume of this illustrated book, which highlights the beauty and spirituality of Japan’s venerated mountain through masterful compositions.
