Colour woodblock printed book, Volume 2 of 'Picture book of selected insects' (Ehon mushi erami) by Kitagawa Utamaro, published by Tsutaya Jūzaburō in Edo (modern Tokyo), Japan, in 1788. In this two-volume work, short, witty verses (known as kyōka) penned by Edo's leading poets are paired with elegant insects and other small creatures captured by the artist Utamaro. Exquisitely carved and printed, small touches of glittering mica complete the luxurious feel.
