Woodblock print with hand-applied colour, Woman in black raincoat by Okumura Masanobu, printed in Japan, around 1738. Hosoban format, urushi-e print in fan shape. This kind of hand-coloured woodblock print is known as an urushi-e or 'lacquer picture'. Named for the glossy black finish achieved by applying animal glue to areas of black ink, here the technique is used to emphasise the soaked raincoat.
