Arabic calligraphy in bird form: the bismillah.
Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim (In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate). This holy phrase in Arabic introduces almost every chapter of the Qur’an. In Muslim life, the bismillah is also spoken or written at the start of all important tasks, to bless the work that follows. Master-calligraphers write out these words with particular attention.
Folio, ink on paper, Arabic text, the bismillah in the outline form of a bird, unsigned, possibly Istanbul, Turkey, dated 1250H, 1834-1835.
