Folio with three-quarter page miniature from a book of hours attributed to the Dunois Master, written in Latin and French in a bastarda script, made in Paris and dated 1443–1445. It was commissioned by Prigent de Coëtivy (1399?–1450) on the occasion of his marriage to Marie de Rais (1429–1457). The folio was removed from the bound volume between 1933 and 1960. Beneath rubrics in red, a prayer to St Anne and the Virgin Mary opens with the illuminated initial ‘A’ (Anna salve sanctissima saluatoris carissima que clara niter aurea celi splendens) painted with white, red, blue and gold ivy-leaf ornament. It is one of an unusually large series of forty-seven suffrages, or short prayers to saints, arranged hierarchically. The section opens with a number of prefatory prayers, followed by the Apostles, Martyrs, Confessors and Virgins. The miniature is painted in demi-grisaille with pigments and gold and depicts St Anne with Mary and the baby Jesus. They sit on a wide throne with gilded lion finials, topped by a canopy which breaks the frame. The infant, supported by both his mother and grandmother, holds a piece of fruit and points to the open book in Mary’s lap. The objects suggest his role as the word incarnate and redeemer of sin. Anne’s very presence alludes to Mary’s Immaculate Conception, allowing her to become the vessel of the Incarnate. This is accentuated with the inclusion of the Meeting of Anne and Joachim at the Golden Gate in the lower margin. According to apocryphal texts, Mary’s parents were unable to conceive. While separated an angel appeared to Joachim informing him of his wife’s pregnancy, and allowing them to reunite and embrace at the city gate. Large strawberries appear beside them, a sign of the Passion to come, their trifoliate leaves a reference to the Trinity. A vase of foliage is added to the upper margin on the verso.
