Mezzotint on paper of Pluto and Proserpina from a series known as 'The Loves of the Gods', engraved and published by John Smith (1652-1743) in London in 1709. The prints are based on less modest and more tightly composed engravings by Jacopo Caraglio (1500-c.1565) after preparatory drawings by Perino del Vaga (1501-1547) and Rosso Fiorentino (1494-1540) published in Rome c. 1527. They were copied from a series of leather wall-hangings, then thought to be by Titian (1489/90-1576), in the Titian Room at Blenheim Palace, destroyed by fire in 1861. Pluto, god of the underworld, grasps the leg of Proserpina. The heads of Cerberus are visible between their legs. Cupid sits on a wheel of Pluto’s chariot and shoots an arrow into the air. When Pluto abducted Proserpina, Ceres, goddess of agriculture, abandoned her duties to desperately search for her daughter. While they were eventually reunited, Proserpina was tricking into eating pomegranate (the fruit of the underworld) and was therefore forced to live with Pluto for a third of every year (winter). Each spring when she returns to her mother, the earth blooms again. Cupid does not appear in Caraglio’s version and in his place is Pluto’s pitchfork.
