Mezzotint portrait on paper of the child Henry George Herbert (1772-1833), later Earl of Carnarvon, engraved by John Raphael Smith (1751-1812) and published by John Boydell (1719-1804) in London in 1776. It is a copy of a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), current whereabouts unknown. The young boy stands in a grotto, resting his arms on a basket of grapes. Two tigers relax beside him and Bacchus’ thyrsus is places at his foot. For another image of a child as Bacchus see Wep 4178.13.
