Mezzotint portrait on paper of Rebecca Rushout (née Bowles), Lady Northwick (1740-1818), and her children--Lady Harriet Cockerell (née Rushout) (d. 1851), John Rushout, 2nd Baron Northwick (1770-1859) and Anne Rushout (c. 1768-1849)--engraved by Thomas Watson (1750-1781) in London in 1778 after a pastel by Daniel Gardner (c. 1750-1805). The pastel was sold at Christie's, London, 16 March 1982, lot 43 for £12,000.
The mother is seated on the base of a column holding up a bunch of grapes in one hand and touching the younger girl's cheek with the other. On the left, the elder daughter holds the younger one's arm, in her right hand is an open book. The young boy sits beside his mother, his right hand around the little girl's waist, in his left a basket of grapes.
Rebeca Rushout married the 1st Baron of Northwick. Lady Harriet Cockerelle married Sir Charles Cockerell of Sezincot, John Rushout was an art collector, connoisseur and the 2nd Baron of Northwick, and Anne Rushout was a watercolourist.
