Fashion plate from the Magasin des Modes Nouvelles (year 4, no. 25) published in Paris on 1 August 1789 with three hand-coloured engravings made by A. B. Duhamel (1736 - after 1800) after designs by Jean Florent Defraine (1754 - after 1804) printed on a single sheet showing 1. an upholstered settee or sofa carved with arabesques, 2 and 3. two woman in half-mourning attire, worn towards the end of the period of mourning after the death of the Dauphin, Louis Joseph (1781-1789), who died 4 June. Both women are dressed in white linon with black trimmings, white bonnettes of different form ornamented with black ribbon and black egret feathers, and have white gloves and black fans, the second woman is wearing a jacket ('pierrot').
