- Description:
- Codex manuscript containing a Gospel book written on paper in Armenian in a bologir (cursive miniscule) script, made for the Patriarch of the Armenian Church, Constantine I (1221-1267) between 1248 and 1267 and attributed to the illuminator Kirakos (active 1239-1267), probably at Hromkla (modern Turkey). It was acquired by Beatty from the London-based dealer, William H. Robinson, in May 1947. This manuscript is an outstanding example of thirteenth-century art from the Armenian kingdom of Cilicia (1099–1375), situated in the southeast of modern Turkey. It was prepared for the Catholicos Constantine I (1221–1267), Patriarch of the Armenian Church. Constantine was a leading patron of the arts and this gospel book was probably produced at Hromkla, capital of his patriarchal see. The illumination is attributed to the artist Kirakos and displays a remarkable amalgamation of Byzantine and Islamic ornament. Eusebius’ letter to Carpianus explaining the use of his canon tables—a concordance of gospel texts—is included here within ornamental frames featuring portraits of both individuals. The palette of blue on gold in the headings recalls contemporary cloisonné enamels.
