- Description:
- Parchment folio from a Gospel book written and illuminated c. 1536 in the Suynik' province of Armenia for Esayi the 'great vardapet' (abbot). This is one of fourteen folios removed from the manuscript and housed separately. The Harrowing of Hell (recto) shows Jesus (holding a cross staff) taking the hand of Adam. Eve and another woman stand behind Adam, with David, Solomon and John the Baptist behind Jesus. Below, demons are trapped beneath the broken doors of hell, fallen in the shape of a cross. In the Women at the Tomb (verso), three women, stand before an angel pointing to the empty tomb, the sleeping soldiers depicted at the bottom.
