- Parchment folio from a Gospel book written and illuminated c. 1536 in the Suynik' province of Armenia for Esayi the 'great vardapet' (abbot). This is one of fourteen folios removed from the manuscript and housed separately. In the Transfiguration (recto), Jesus stands in a mandorla flanked by Elijah and Moses. Below are the apostles Peter, James and John who go to a mountain with Jesus to pray and see a vision of him in heavenly glory. In the Dormition of the Virgin (verso) the apostles are gathered around Mary's deathbed. In the foreground is a man known as Athonios or Jephonias whose hands were cut off by the archangel Michael when he attempted to turn over Mary's funeral bier. His hands were restored after asking for Mary's forgiveness. Jesus hovers above, holding his mother's soul.
