- Description:
- Bi-folio from an illuminated Gospel book written in Armenian on paper in bolorgir and erkat'agir script, by the scribe and artist Martiros of Khizan in 1596 at Constantinople (Istanbul). On the left-hand page is the Presentation at the Temple of Jerusalem of the baby Jesus. The text above reads ‘The coming to the temple on the fortieth day’. Joseph holds two doves or pigeons which were presented to the temple at the Purification of Mary, performed at the same time. The baby is held by Simeon over an altar, foreshadowing his future sacrifice. Anna the prophetess stands behind them holding a scroll. On the right-hand page is the Baptism of Jesus (identified in the text above) by John the Baptist. Jesus stands waste deep in the river as the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove, identifying him as the Son of God. Two angels stand on the opposite shore to emphasise the importance of the scene. Fish are visible beneath the waves, as is the personification of the River Jordan, a figure holding a ewer and crook.
