- Description:
- Book-stand (rahl). This book-stand folds out into a standing x-shape, to hold an open book. The functional design goes back many centuries, and is also produced in woodwork and other media. This one is very similar to another example (now in the V&A) produced by Mahomed Amin: his award-winning work was displayed at a 1903 exhibition in Delhi, celebrating the accession of Edward VII (r. 1901-1910) as Emperor of India. Folding book-stand (rahl), carved stone (bowenite, a variant of serpentine), with gold-overlaid steel frame, stonework probably Bhera, metalwork probably Sialkot, Pakistan, c. 1900.
