Folio, ink, colours and gold on paper, Persian text in naskh script, painting (on verso), from Translation of the History of the New World (Tarjuma-ye ta'rikh-e yangi dunya), Persian translation attributed to Ahizade `Ali Celebi, from original Turkish (chapter 3 only) History of the West Indies (Ta'rih-i Hind-i Garbi) or New Report (Hadis-i nev), by Mehmed ibn Hasan al-Su`udi (d. 1591), composed for Ottoman sultan Murad III in 1583, based on Historia general de las Indias by Francisco Lopez de Gomara (d. 1566) and other Spanish sources and Italian translations, unsigned, possibly Deccan, India, undated, c. 1600-1700. The manuscript codex, and five other detached folios, are also in this museum collection (Chester Beatty T 560).
