On falconry (Kitab al-bayzara), by the Fatimid caliph's court falconer.
Produced under the Fatimid dynasty in Cairo, this treatise covers both falconry and hunting: like most rulers, the patron Caliph al-`Aziz billah (r. 975-996) was known to enjoy hunting, archery and polo. The text discusses first-hand knowledge of hunting practices, and also adds poetry and anecdotes on the same subject. The author was the Caliph's court falconer, `Abdullah al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn al-Bazyar: he drew extensively from another work, Kitab al-masayid wa'l-matarid written by the poet Kushajim (d. 970), who is not credited.
Codex, ink on paper, 154 folios, Arabic text in naskh script, with headings in red, Kitab al-Bayzara, treatise on falconry and hunting, incomplete text, produced for Fatimid caliph al-`Aziz (r. 975-996) by his chief falconer (bazyar) `Abdullah al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn al-Bazyar, unsigned, undated, possibly c. 975.
