Bifolio from an illuminated Gospel book written in Armenian on paper in Bolorgir script, by the scribe and artist Martiros of Khizan in 1596 at Constantinople (Istanbul). The left-hand page depicts the Entry into Jerusalem, the inscription reads ‘it is Palm Sunday’. Jesus sits side-saddle on a donkey, accompanied by his haloed-apostles. They approach the city gate where two men welcome them. A small figure in the lower right lays clothing along the path, while another diminutive figure stands in a palm tree cutting fronds to place on the ground. The Washing of Feet is illustrated on the right-hand page, as noted in the text above. During the Last Supper, as a sign of humility and farewell, Jesus washed the feet of his apostles, here represented by Peter who scratches his head in confusion.
