Bifolio from an illuminated Gospel book written in Armenian on paper in Bolorgir script, by the scribe and artist Martiros of Khizan in 1596 at Constantinople (Istanbul). The left-hand page depicts the Crucifixion. The inscription reads, ‘In similitude to Christ the pelican pierced his side and revived his young; Christ pierced his side and redeemed us with his blood.’ The crucified Jesus is flanked by his mother, the Virgin Mary, and St John the apostle, angels weep in the upper corners. The sun and moon either side of the cross represent the eclipse said to have taken place during the crucifixion. The pelican and her young are perched at the top of the cross and the skull of Adam sits at its foot. The Entombment is illuminated on the right-hand page, the inscription reads ‘the burial of the Lord’. Jesus is wrapped in a burial shroud and carried by Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea. The Virgin Mary and another female disciple, likely Mary Magdalene, are also present. Two angels watch over the scene from the upper corners. A pair of candles flank the central cross.
