Jade book in which the Shunzhi Emperor confers a title on his ancestor, written in Chinese and Manchu, the text engraved and partly gilded, partly painted in ink, on ten folios of nephrite jade; made in China, dated 1648. The ten jade tablets that form this bilingual book are pierced at the back and were presumably bound together with cords to form a single object. As the Chinese text reads from right to left and the Manchu text from left to right, each inscription begins at its respective cover to end in the middle in a symmetrical arrangement. As such, the particular nature of this jade book means that it could be read from either cover. No original numbering of the folios is apparent; the folios here are presented from right to left along the object.
