Woodblock print, 'Qilin brings a son', printed in ink and colours on paper by an unknown artist in China in the late 19th or early 20th century. Inexpensive ‘popular prints’ (minjian banhua), also called ‘New Year prints’ (nian hua), were made throughout China in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Plump, healthy boys are common motifs in popular prints. Here, a mythical qilin brings a son. The child holds a wish-granting sceptre and a stack of books, auspicious symbols expressing the hope for distinguished sons. The woman in the background is perhaps Bixia Yuanjun, the goddess of childbirth, accompanied by her attendant.
