Manuscript containing a Treatise on Astronomy (Sefer Ha-Tekhuna) by Hayyim Vital (1542–1620), written in Hebrew in a rabbinic script in Damascus in the early 17th century. It contains 17 diagrams in gold, red and blue, with titles in gold. Two previous owners signed the first folio: Raphael Mosche Galico and Hayyim de Rosa, both Jewish kabbalists based in Damascus in the 18th century. Hayyim Vital was a prominent kabbalist and the chief disciple of Isaac Luria in Safed (Israel), whose teachings are primarily known through Vital’s compendium, Etz Hayyim (Tree of Life). This treatise is one of Vital’s own works.
