Colour woodblock print, 'New year's dream' from the series 'Prosperous flowers of the elegant twelve months' (Fūryū jūniki no eiga) by Isoda Koryūsai, printed in Japan around 1773. Trimmed nishiki-e print. A young couple are pictured at New Year. As they doze, they share a dream of Mt Fuji, a hawk and a crop of aubergines: a lucky combination for the first dream of the New Year. This is the first sheet in a set of twelve prints exploring sexual encounters across the twelve months. As is often the case with suites of explicitly erotic ukiyo-e prints (known as shunga or 'spring pictures' in Japanese), the first image is relatively coy when compared to the works that follow.
