Colour woodblock print, 'Guo Ju' (Kakkyo) from the series 'Mirror of 24 paragons of filial piety for children' (Nijūshi kō dōji kagami) by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, published by Wakasaya Yoichi in Edo (modern Tokyo), Japan, around 1843. Yoko-ōban format, nishiki-e print. Originally compiled during China’s Yuan dynasty (1280-1368), the suite of stories ‘24 paragons of filial piety’ presents examples of children showing proper regard for their parents in line with Confucian ideals. The stories also found popularity in Japan. Seeing his aged mother weakened by hunger, Guo Ju (known as Kakkyo in Japan) prepared to kill his child that there might be one less mouth to feed. While digging a grave in preparation, he discovered a pot of gold and the child’s life was spared.
