Colour woodblock print, Young man and woman dressed as monks by Isoda Koryūsai, printed in Japan around 1785. Hashira-e (pillar print) format, nishiki-e print. This young man and woman carry the basket-like bamboo hats of komusō: wandering monks of the Fuke sect of Zen Buddhism known for playing the shakuhachi flute. As the monks could not be compelled to remove their hats (which completely concealed their faces), the costume of a komusō became a preferred disguise for those seeking to travel incognito.
