Papyrus fragment preserving a land lease including the subscriptions of both lessor and lessee and the registration docket, written in Philadelphia on 28 July 21 AD.
'Seventh year of Tiberius Caesar Augustus, month of Hyperberetaeus the fourth, Mesore the fourth, at Philadelphia in the division of Heraclides in the Arsinoite nome. Pasion son of Petalus, forty-nine years old, with a scar on his left thumb, leased to Harmiusis son of Horus, Persian of the epigone, forty years old, with a scar on the first finger of his left hand, the allotment belonging to him in the area of the aforesaid village, of three arouras or whatever be the dimensions, called 'of the half-aurora crop', for three years from the approaching eighth year of Tiberius Caesar Augustus at a yearly rent, for the first two years, including the three artabas of barley, and for the third and last year of the lease, for the sowing of grass for pasturage and folding of sheep, without allowance of seed, of nine artabas of wheat, and all by the quarter measure of merchants, not subject to any deduction. The lessee then shall not abandon the lease before the time but shall perform all the annual work of the allotment and the construction of dykes, irrigation and all other agricultural operations at his own expense and shall each year pay Pasion the yearly rent in the month of Pauni at the village, in new, pure, and unadulterated corn; and after the time he shall hand over the land free from rushes, reeds, coarse grass, and all dirt, and fallowed as aforesaid; and if any manuring be done each party shall contribute half, the right of execution lying with Pasion against Harmiusis and against all his property as if by a legal decision; and Pasion himself shall guarantee the lease to him on the aforementioned terms and free from taxes. Subscriber, Heraclas son of Phaesis, twenty-one years old, with a scar on his right fore-arm. (Signed) I, Pasion son of Petalus, have leased the allotment on all forewritten terms and I will guarantee it. (Signed) I, Harmiusis son of Horus, Persian of the epigone, have taken up the lease of the allotment of Pasion in the area of Philadelphia, of three arouras or whatever be the dimensions, called 'of the half-aroura crop', for three years from the eighth year of Tiberius Caesar Augustus, at a yearly rent, for the first two years, including three artabas of barely as seed, of thirty artabas of barley, and the last year, for the sowing of grass for pasturage and folding of sheep, without allowance of seed, of nine artabas of wheat, and all by the quarter measure of merchants, and I will perform all other conditions as aforesaid.
