Amulet containing a series of laments of a wandering lover (bilang-bilang), maker unknown, early 20th century, northern Sumatra. Ink on bamboo. The term ‘Batak’ covers a number of linguistic groups. This amulet was made by the Karo-Batak of northern Sumatra. After the lover’s laments, the author describes the coming of Dutch colonial government to the region.
