Mezzotint print on paper of The Game Stall engraved by Richard Earlom (1743-1822) and published by John Boydell (1719-1804) in London in 1783. It is a copy of a painting by Frans Snyders (1579-1657) but was not part of the series of market stalls then in the collection of Robert Walpole at Houghton Hall but rather a similar version of his Game Market then in the collection of William Cavendish (1593-1676), Duke of Newcastle (coat of arms below), and now in the York Art Gallery. The stall keeper presents a selection of birds and animals including peacock, swan, partridge, chicken and duck, deer, rabbit, boar and cow’s heads, and other pre-cut pieces. Two dogs look longingly at groups of birds while a cat, under the bench, holds a song bird under its paw. For another market stall by Earlom after Snyders see Wep 4178.46.
