Plate no. 10 from a series of 12 etchings (including the frontispiece) reproducing the decoration of the vault of the Loggia di Psyche at the Villa Farnesina in Rome, etched by Nicolas Dorigny (1658-1746) and published by Domenico de' Rossi (1647-1729) in Rome in 1693. The loggia takes its name from the frescoes painted by Raphael (1483-1520) and his workshop c. 1518. The paintings represent episodes from book four of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses (or Golden Ass), the Tale of Cupid and Psyche. Before the assembled Council of Gods, Jupiter grants Psyche immortality so the couple can marry. On the left, Mercury hands Psyche a cup of ambrosia, the nectar of immortality. Beside them are the personifications of the Nile (reclining against a Sphinx) and the Ganges (leaning against a beast). The numbers identify 1. Cupid, 2. Venus and 3. Psyche.
